The Beginning of the Rest of our Life

Farley Family 2006

Well it’s been a long year. Obviously not long enough, as I failed to update the front page of this website in 2006. Since this year we’re moving away we’ll try to do a better job of posting updates here for friends and family back in California.

That’s right, we’re moving to Texas. We just recently moved from Antelope, CA to Elk Grove, CA so I could be closer to work, where I planned on staying for another few years. That was before my last semester at Sac State started where I received some great job offers from companies recruiting on campus. So after only three months in Elk Grove, we’re packing up and heading to Houston to start a career with CR.

A lot has happened with our family over the past year which Tia summarized in a Christmas letter (email) sent out to some friends and family. For posterity’s sake I will attempt here to outline some of the news:

As always at the end of the year I put together a compilation video of home movies and photos taken throughout the year. I do my best to keep these interesting and enjoyable by adding some catchy tunes and keeping the clips short.

2006’s Aloha video along with all the other videos on this site are available in the revamped video section. As of now all videos can be viewed inline (a la YouTube) as well as downloaded. Additionally the 4 newest videos are directly linked on the left-hand navigational menus.

The photo albums have been revamped as well. The 4 albums which have been most recently updated are directly linked on the upper-left navigational menu.

My original career goals involved agencies such as the FBI, CIA, and Homeland Security. I wanted to use my language (French) and IT skills in an exciting career that would take my family around the world.

Unfortunately getting a job at a place like the FBI involves nearly 2 years of testing and background investigations. Compare this with the 2-3 week time-line of being hired in the private sector, at a much higher salary, and the decision for us was made easy.

After landing interviews with Deloitte & Touche, Hitachi Consulting, iRadeon, AgencyFusion, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and CR, we saw that CR was the best fit for our family and accepted their job offer.

CR’s benefits, work/life balance, corporate culture and career opportunities won us over. As an “IT Professional” I will have the opportunity to work all over the world on many diverse technology projects. We specifically requested to start in Houston due to the exceptional housing market.

Missionary Updates!

Near the end of 2006 Sister Makana Limary returned home from her mission to Omaha Nebraska. Over the summer she worked with me at the county as an intern in the public relations department. Makana is now in Utah working as a fitness trainer at a boarding school and plans on returning to BYU Hawaii this year.

Elder Adam Farley continues to enjoy his mission in Salt Lake City, Utah. His pictures can be found in our online photo albums.

Elder Robert Limary embarked on his mission to Calgary, Canada, Spanish speaking. He too enjoys his mission and sends pictures for us to post. It has been fun to read Robbie’s letters and see how the mission has helped him to learn and grow so much.

Bragging time…

For my final (senior) project at Sac State I created an interactive real estate mapping application.

The program uses AJAX and Google Maps to plot real estate on an interactive map. Users can specify criteria such as proximity and square feet to filter results. Check it out here and try dragging the red marker to change proximity.

The application has been dubbed HouseHunter2 and has been released as an open-source project at SourceForget.net.

As a techie you end being the help-desk support and webmaster for your friends and family. This year brought rise to the following websites:

poulsonfamily.org – this is a ‘farleyfamily.net’ for my in-laws
• makanalimary.com – Makana’s professional portfolio and web presence
• canadyfamily.net – another family blog for my good friends Jean and Vinson
ryansawyer.net – who is this guy??
